He believes in basically having an impact on all the things Im talking about; the construction of character, giving back to your community, involving the community. Melissa: So Ive read a lot about you and your teams core values, which I am a huge believer in core values. Author: Anson Dorrance Corey Emerick. One of the toughest things with women is to get them to lead verbally, because what every woman in the room understands, as soon as a woman leader opens her mouth everyones going to think shes a bitch. But a lot of what goes on, I think, that takes us and our teams to our potential is our capacity to motivate the players that are in our environment. That warm Carolina night, he blessed us with pearls of wisdom. And he would say it calmly and, you know, with warmth. We have 13 different core values that every one of our players has to live by. Coach Anson Dorrance (2006) People who make a living from studying what makes organizations excellent usually boil their consistent success down to the group living a powerful set of core values. These have been developed over the years. The kid has come home from school with all Fs on his report card. And so I learned a lot from Jack. When you hear that, what comes to mind as we talk about how the best managers are really coaches? Well, thank you so much for taking time today. So how have you been able to take those conversations that you have using this data to create a more positive motivational environment around feedback? And he believes in creating community, he believes in treating people exceptionally well. So I really, really appreciate it. This woman said this was transformational. He has one of the most successful coaching records in the history of athletics. The School of Government depends on private and public support for fulfilling its mission. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. We had no idea if this was the best stuff. The first principle of teaching and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormons, is love those you teach. I mean, in your career and experience, whats different from developing players to developing coaches? The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit And even if its delusional I still wont touch it. And most of what we do in our environment is construct confidence. For example, the first core value is "we don't whine." And I learned about this when I was working for Franklin Covey. And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. And obviously youre going to have a different set just based on your own culture. So its almost like a gender pressure against leadership. It can save the United States, but it has to be done in the right way. So we took every one of our principles and we attached a motivational quote that every kid in our program had to memorize. Melissa: Bye-bye. Anson: She would, you know, say something before the game, she would be saying stuff throughout the game, and finally, when were about to end, at the end of the NCAA tournament, and my real leaders came up to me and said Anson, youve got to get so-and-so to shut the F up. My job is to get them to the truth as fast as possible. And then theyre all forced totheyre all forced to memorize. And of course you hire Millennials. And obviously our history is so good at projecting this they have to make a change if they want to get there. Melissa: So do you incorporate your core values back into your recruiting process? And I want to sit there and I want to get $100,000 for sitting there and just answering questions. Melissa: I love that. Here are the core values of the UNC women's soccer team: We don't whine. This stuff is recorded. He has won 22 National Championships and is the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. Anson: I wish I could. And then what was really cool is in the spring of every players senior year we have our final banquet. And then basically getting their personal narrative to the truth and my opinion, those are the three most critical things about what my responsibility here is for these wonderful kids I get to train. What you have to recruit and who you have to hire is character. In the performance review a lot of the review is done by themselves, because what most of us have is we all develop a personal narrative. Jay Reeves practiced law in North Carolina and South Carolina and is author of The Most Powerful Attorney in the World. Because obviously almost every kid we recruit on scholarship has the dream of playing professionally, so almost every one of our scholarship kids does sign a professional contract. So what we did is we took our 12 core values and we assigned a motivational quote attached to each one, and we ask every one of our players to memorize all of these motivational quotes attached to each core value. So we have these more formal reviews basically 3 times a year. But whats shocking to us is how often extraordinary talent never gets on the field. So all these things are critical. If you leave the subject blank, this will be default subject the message will be sent with.
